Dennett and Searle on Consciousness: Relevance for Robot Construction
This paper contrasts Searle's theory of consciousness with Dennett's. It draws from material in Searle's book \The Rediscovery of the Mind" Searle, 1992] and his article Minds, Brains, and Programs Searle, 1980], and Dennett's book \Consciousness Explained." Dennett, 1991] The paper focuses on issues that are relevant to the design of intelligent robot systems such as Cog. In particular, it dis...

Searle's celebrated Chinese Room Argument has shaken the foundations of Artificial Intelligence. Many refutations have been attempted, but none seem convincing. This paper is an attempt to sort out explicitly the assumptions and the logical, methodological and empirical points of disagreement. Searle is shown to have underestimated some features of computer modeling, but the heart of the issue ...
متن کاملSymbol Grounding and its Implications for Artificial Intelligence
In response to Searle's well-known Chinese room argument against Strong AI (and more generally, computationalism), Harnad proposed that if the symbols manipulated by a robot were sufficiently grounded in the real world, then the robot could be said to literally understand. In this article, I expand on the notion of symbol groundedness in three ways. Firstly, I show how a robot might select the ...

A: I am here supporting the systems reply to John Searle's Chinese Room thought experiment. In the case of the Chinese Room, it is clear that no single element of the system understands Chinese: the English-speaking operator does not, by definition; the slips of paper can not, because a slip of paper is incapable of understanding; the book of rules does not because it is entirely inflexible. Ho...
متن کاملArtificial Intelligence and Personal Identity
Considerations of personal identity bear on John Searle's Chinese Room argument, and on the opposed position that a computer itself could really understand a natural language. In this paper I develop the notion of a virtual person, modelled on the concept of virtual machines familiar in computer science. I show how Searle's argument, and J. Maloney's attempt to defend it, fail. I conclude that ...
